The Jungle Book is a classic tale that's been made into movies and TV shows many times, but the version that most people seem to be talking about lately is the one from India. This version was originally produced in Hindi (and later dubbed into English and Bengali), and it was first broadcast on national television in the early 1980s, back when TV's were attached to walls instead of sitting flat on people's laps. More than thirty years later, the series is still being watched by kids and adults alike. It's one of those rare series that has real cross-generational appeal: parents grew up watching the show, and now they watch it with their own children. The Jungle Book centres around Mowgli, a young boy raised by wolves. When he's sold to humans, he goes on an adventure to find his true identity. The basic premise is well-known, but the Hindi version keeps things interesting by giving Mowgli lines in Hindi. The show is full of jokes and slapstick that kids will laugh at, but adults will appreciate as well. The shows are not perfect - there are some characters who are flat and uninteresting (there's one particular character who acts like a role model for Indian women), and there's no real backstory or character development for many of the main characters. But the thing that makes this version of The Jungle Book so memorable is the songs. Seriously, they're fantastic. There's a song about a girl who has to marry a man she doesn't love, and another about a cow who loses her tail... they're unforgettable. For an old show, The Jungle Book is really well done.
